ABOUT DEBORAH WILDING

Hand embroidery work, using traditional methods to produce work of exceptionally high quality, is my guiding standard.

I am trained in historically accurate techniques, including Goldwork, Silk Shading, Whitework, Canvas techniques, Stumpwork, Appliqué, Blackwork, Crewelwork among others. My experience includes working on large studio projects and on small scale items for customers.

As well as working on embroidery projects myself, I also teach embroidery skills on behalf of the Royal School of Needlework and in private settings.

Originally from Carlisle in Cumbria, I am now based in North Somerset in England’s West Country. After completing the Royal School of Needlework’s ‘Future Tutor’ course (the world’s leading educational establishment for the teaching of hand embroidery to a professional level) and graduating with distinction in 2015, I have been employed by the RSN to teach on both the “Certificate and Diploma Programme” and their extensive “Day Class Programme”, both in the UK and abroad.

In my freelance capacity I work from my seaside studio on day class designs, restoration projects, private commissions, as well as teaching private lessons.

In addition to travelling around the UK and further afield I often have students visit me in my home studio. This can involve project planning, designing an embroidery for a special event or celebration or giving one to one lessons in specific techniques, working at the student’s pace and concentrating on specifics. My studio space is located in the seafront area of Clevedon, North Somerset. Looking out over the Bristol Channel towards Wales, the setting could not be more inspirational.

Clevedon boasts a Grade I listed pier and is home to a wonderful collection of independent shops and cafes, which are a particular feature of this beautiful seaside Victorian town.

CAREER TO DATE

Based at the RSN Bristol Satellite in the south west of England, I have been studying with the Royal School of Needlework since 2010. I began with the RSN Certificate course for which I was awarded a Distinction in 2012, before graduating from the Future Tutor Programme with a distinction in June 2015. While a student I was awarded both the Teaching Award in 2013 and the Elizabeth Elvin Goldwork Award in 2015.

As well as teaching the Certificate and Diploma course from our Bristol Satellite I also teach a selection of Day Classes and intensive courses in Hampton Court Palace, Bristol and the USA. When time permits I work as a studio stitcher in the commercial workroom of the RSN at Hampton Court Palace.

During 2018 I have been featured in a Crewelwork digital class, a new online project making RSN classes available to a global audience – the first of these will be launched during 2018.

As well as working for the RSN I also work in a freelance capacity from my North Somerset studio, working on kit design, private commissions, restoration projects and bespoke classes.

Over the last three years my work has featured in both the TIMES and GUARDIAN newspapers. During 2014 I was chosen as an artist to work on part of the “Shaun in the City” project with my sculpture (Ruffles). After a number of exhibitions around the country, the sculpture was decorated with embroidered accessories and auctioned to raise money for the “Aardman Grand Appeal”.

After completion of the Future Tutor programme my work was exhibited at the Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexander palace with an article featuring me and the programme in STITCH magazine 2016.
